anyways, that’s enough about dead mathematicians
Boy’s surface is a 3D projection of the real projective plane with no singularities. The Roman surface is similar, but has several singularities on its edges. This GIF is an animation of the homotopy from the Roman surface to the Boy surface.
It’s not especially interesting, but I like the story behind it:
Werner Boy (May 4, 1879 − September 6, 1914) was a German mathematician. He was the discoverer and eponym of Boy’s surface — a three-dimensional projection of the real projective plane without singularities, the first of its kind. He discovered it in 1901 after his thesis adviser, David Hilbert, asked him to prove that it was not possible to immerse the real projective plane in three-dimensional space. Boy sketched several models of the surface, and discovered that it could have 3-fold rotational symmetry, but was unable to find a parametric model for the surface. It was not until 1978 that Bernard Morin found the first parametrisation, with the aid of computers.
After completing his dissertation, Boy worked as a high school teacher in Krefeld, Germany. He later returned to his birth town of Barmen (today Wuppertal) to teach. He died as a soldier in the first weeks of World War I on 6 September 1914.
RIP, Werner Boy. I think your little surface is neat.
That gif plays about five times as fast on my desktop as it does on my phone. Technology is truly incredible.
💩 guess who’s back 💩
seriously though please pay me to make gifs. please. i’m so good at it. why would you not want one made just for you. i’ll even put a secret message in the binary with your name and a love letter describing your beautiful legs/hair/etc. and tell you how to find it but no one else so the knowledge is yours to share as you please.
Do you want a portrait of yourself or a loved one reworked into a breathtaking pixel array? Do you want to give me money in exchange for Art?
Finally, your dreams can come true. I’m opening commissions. Send me an email today at firstname.lastname@example.org!
I can only accept PAYPAL and I will only discuss commissions via EMAIL.
Single Pass PNG Glitch - $20
Voronoi Mesh - $30
(This example is actually simpler than some of the ideas I have for combining multiple images by individual cells, but it gives you a good idea of the general aesthetic)
GIFs - $30
MYSTERY GLITCH - $25 to $50
This one’s simple. You email me any number of images you want me to use, and I will make you something unique and nice to look at. Pricing is a range and can be agreed upon before I begin working. The more money you give me, the more time I spend on your ART!
All profits from this endeavor will go directly towards cheeseburgers and new jeans. Thank you.
